How to Cook on a Charcoal GrillThere is nothing quite like a steak grilled to perfection. Unfortunately, few people know how to cook on a charcoal grill successfully. Most either end up with dry charred meat that was cooked too long on too high a heat; or find themselves trying desperately to get their meat to cook at all. Learning how to cook on a charcoal grill isn’t difficult; but there are some definite methods that you will need to know – and use – to turn yourself into a true grillmaster.

Step # 1: Choose the right charcoal. There are two types of charcoal that can be used for grilling: hardwood charcoal and briquettes. Most people use briquettes because they seem easier to use; but hardwood is actually much simpler to control and cooks better since it produces a more intense heat. If you do plan to use briquettes, be sure to pick ones with a slight wood smell for better results.

Step # 2: Add flavor with aromatic wood chips. Soaking just a few handfuls of hickory, maple, cherry or oak wood chips in water, than placing the drained chips in with your charcoal can add a lot of extra flavor to your meats.

Step # 3: Distribute your charcoal evenly. The most common form of grilling meat on a charcoal grill is done through direct heat. This requires an even distribution of burning coals across the bottom of your grill.

Step # 4: Place the grill rack over ashen coals. Never try and grill meat while the charcoal is still burning with a flame. This will cook the outside of the meat too quickly; thus drying it out.

Step # 5: Sear your meat first for about 1 minute on each side and then continue grilling for about 10 minutes for every ounce or until the meat being cooked has reached the proper temperature.

These tips for teaching you how to cook on a charcoal grill are just the beginning. Use them to get started, but be sure to try out any new ideas you can come up with to enhance the flavor of your meat. Cooking meat on a grill is a great way to perfect your culinary talents; plus it is tasty!
